Had quite a rough day today. Almost everything has gone haywire—got soaked, got stuck in traffic and got extremely hungry too. But at the end of the day, no matter how tired or grumpy or hungry I was, it no longer mattered. Just the thought of how children dropped by either to randomly tell how their day went or to proudly state how well they performed in their respective classes simply did magic. Last week it was Harzel, this day it was Reynan. And Chrycel.
Chrycel happened to pass by the stairs after I sent the kids home this afternoon. She greeted me, gave me a warm smile and proudly said "ma'am first ako!". Wow, that's already the second "ma'am first ako" statement I heard kids from my previous class say. =)
And Reynan. The kid made my day when he went to me (yes, he went to my class like Harzel did, minus the card) and told me that he has a good news for me. Flashing a smile, he proudly said that he managed to beat a number of first honors from previous third grade sections in his class, and that his highest grade was 93 and his lowest was 83. Good job! I have always believed in this kid—he had sooo much potential. Some of his talents though weren't probably in complete bloom yet back then due to the competition with the other kids who were well known in class. That, or he probably just needed more push and encouragement (as he didn't seem to fully mind participation back then even if he knows the answer, unless you call him). But look at that, he seems to be blooming now. Sweet. Telling his previous teacher of these achievements? Sweeter. =)
Aww that feeling... It felt like I was a family or something, what with the kids sharing news like that. That being said, I remember the phrase I always tend to end education related essays that I write:
"Teaching is more of a vocation rather than a profession. That is, to give more of yourself to millions of children by touching their lives at every point you have lived."
It might contradict to say that I never wanted to become a teacher when I always say phrases like that, but truth be told, I never did. (I still don't even know what I want in life or where I am going to either.) And though I still am doubting being a teacher at some point in times, it is in situations like these that I find the aforementioned phrase ringing a bell somewhere in my system. Is this what people call "the calling"?
Whatever.
Whatever it is, I'll just continue doing my best. As the old saying goes, all's well that ends well. Le me will do me best, le kids will do they best. All's well that ends well.
Fighto~
